Our Mission

Quantum mechanics describes all nature at the most fundamental, smallest-scale level -- sub-atomic particles, atoms and light. Chemical reactions are, at their core, quantum mechanical processes that involve the motion of electrons and nuclei. Understanding the ways that chemical reactions occur is important to being able to predict new reactions.

The Center for Quantum Molecular Design (CQMD) brings together theorists and experimentalists to tackle the problems of modeling, predicting, and designing systems depending on quantum mechanical properties. CQMD is funded by a Phase I Center for Chemical Innovation (CCI) grant from the National Science Foundation. In Phase I, seven PIs from four institutions will attack problems in the areas of transport and reactivity of proton defects, excitation energy transport, and photochemistry.
